Drain Pipe Slope Calculator

The minimum comes from a table, and the table has three rows. IPC Table 704.1 sets the slope of horizontal drainage piping by size: ¼ inch per foot at 2½ inches and smaller, ⅛ inch per foot from 3 to 6 inches, and ⅒ inch per foot at 8 inches and larger. That is the whole table. The ¼‑inch figure people repeat as “the rule” is the small‑pipe row; a 4‑inch building drain is permitted to run at half that, and a long run often has to.

Percent, ratio and inches per foot are the same number written three ways. ¼ in/ft is 0.25 ÷ 12 = 2.08%, or 1 in 48. ⅛ in/ft is 1.04%, 1 in 96. ⅒ in/ft is 0.52%, 1 in 192. A level reads in one of these, a drawing in another, and a plumber in the third; the page prints all three so nothing is lost in the translation.

Steeper is not automatically better, but the IPC does not cap it. Section 704.1 states a minimum only. The old worry — that a steep drain outruns its solids — is not a code provision in the IPC; what the code does say is that a pipe steeper than 45° is vertical by definition (Chapter 2) and is sized as a stack. Between the minimum and that, the slope is a design choice constrained by where the pipe has to arrive.

The UPC is not the IPC. Uniform Plumbing Code 708.1 asks for ¼ inch per foot generally and allows ⅛ inch per foot only for 4‑inch and larger pipe where the authority approves it. Which code applies is a matter of where you are; this page carries the IPC table, and the flag below says so when your slope would pass one and not the other.
