Field studs are length ÷ spacing + 1. Corners are counted at 3 studs each for
conventional framing (2 for a two-stud corner with drywall clips), and each opening is allowed 4 extra
pieces for king studs, jack studs and cripples — a rough allowance, not a takeoff. Plate material
is wall length × the number of plates.
The framing factor is the share of wall area that is wood rather than insulation. It is the same number
that drives the thermal bridging penalty in an assembly R-value calculation, which is why 24" on
centre saves lumber and improves the wall at once. Real takeoffs come off the drawings; use this to
compare options and to check an order before it arrives.
