Vinyl plank is sold three ways and the box tells you which. Glue-down, click-lock floating, and loose-lay planks come in different sizes and box counts, and the coverage figure on the carton is the only number that joins them. This page takes it as an input for that reason. Two cartons of the same nominal 7 × 48 plank can differ by a square foot a box.
Attached pad or not decides the underlayment line. Many click-lock products carry a pad on the back and forbid a second one, because two layers of cushion let the joints flex and open. Others want a roll under them, sold by the 100 or 200 square feet. The selector above is that yes-or-no; the roll count is the same area over the roll’s coverage, with no waste added because rolls overlap by design.
Rows and the last row work the way they do for laminate. Width over plank width, and the remainder is the strip at the far wall. Under a third of a plank, rip the first row instead. Vinyl tolerates a thinner sliver than laminate does, but it still shows.
Acclimate, and leave the gap. Floating vinyl moves with temperature more than laminate does with humidity; the carton specifies both the acclimation time and the perimeter gap, and a sunlit room needs the full figure.
Boxes = ceil(area × (1 + waste) ÷ coverage per box); rows = ceil(width ÷ plank width); underlayment rolls = ceil(area ÷ roll coverage). Coverage per box and per roll are the carton’s figures. Waste allowances are common practice, not standards.
Worked example
A 12 × 10 ft room in 7 × 48 in vinyl plank, 24.5 ft² a box, with a separate 100 ft² underlayment: boxes and rolls?
- Area = 120 ft²; with 10% waste, 132 ft².
- 132 ÷ 24.5 = 5.4, so 6 boxes (147 ft² bought).
- Underlayment: 120 ÷ 100 = 1.2, so 2 rolls, no waste added — rolls overlap.
6 boxes and 2 rolls. If the plank has a pad attached, the roll count is zero and a second layer is a mistake the carton warns about.
