The grid is a 4-foot module and everything hangs off it. Main tees run the length of the room at 4 feet on centre; 4-foot cross tees span between them every 2 feet, which makes 2 × 4 cells; a 2 × 2 ceiling adds a 2-foot cross tee down the middle of each cell. Wall angle goes round the perimeter and carries the cut edge tiles. The counts above are those rules applied to the room, with the mains on whole 4-foot bays and the border taken up by cut tiles at the walls, which is how a ceiling is laid out so the border cuts match.

Hanger wires are a standard, not a habit. ASTM C636/C636M, the installation standard for suspended ceiling grid, has hangers along the main tees at not more than 4 feet on centre, with a hanger within 8 inches of the wall at each end. The count here is one wire per 4 feet of main run; a room with light fixtures or diffusers needs the extra wires those items call for, which the standard also requires and the count cannot know about.

Mains come in 12-foot lengths, tees in 4 and 2, angle in 10 or 12. The stick counts are the run lengths over those, rounded up. Mains splice end to end, so a 20-foot run is one 12 and one 8 cut from a second 12 — the offcut may serve the next run. Order by the stick count and expect a few offcuts, not by the run length and expect to be short.

Tiles = ceil(area ÷ tile area) × (1 + waste). Main runs = floor(width ÷ 4 ft), each the room length; 4 ft cross tees = main runs × floor(length ÷ 2 ft); 2 ft cross tees (2 × 2 only) = main runs × floor(length ÷ 2 ft). Wall angle = perimeter. Hanger wires = one per 4 ft of main tee, per ASTM C636/C636M §2.3 (hangers at not more than 4 ft o.c. along mains). Stick lengths: mains 12 ft, wall angle 10 ft.

Worked example

A 20 × 16 ft room with a 2 × 4 drop ceiling: tiles, grid and wires?

  1. 320 ft² ÷ 8 = 40 tiles, 42 with 5% for the border cuts.
  2. Mains at 4 ft across 16 ft: 4 runs × 20 ft = 80 ft, seven 12-ft sticks. 4-ft cross tees every 2 ft: 4 × 10 = 40.
  3. Wall angle 72 ft (eight 10-ft sticks); hanger wires one per 4 ft of main, per ASTM C636: 20.

42 tiles, 7 mains, 40 cross tees, 8 sticks of wall angle and 20 hanger wires — plus the extra hangers any light fixture needs, which the count cannot know about.
